UCAPP Athlete, Louise Shanahan, selected for Tokyo Olympics

Louise Shanahan, a Trinity Student who is completing a PHD in Physics has been selected to represent Ireland in the 800m event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Louise has been a UCAPP athlete for 2 years now since she came to Cambridge in 2019. The University of Cambridge Athlete Performance Programme (UCAPP) is a scheme that supports athletes performing at a national level. UCAPP provides strength & conditioning coaching, lifestyle support, access to physiotherapy, sports psychology and sports nutrition. The scheme was created thanks to the generosity of Alumnus Mark Hanson (Girton, 1985).

We caught up with Louise to hear about what it feels like to be participating in the Olympics and how you prepare for such a big event. Oh, and not to forget the varsity victory this weekend with Louise breaking the Oxbridge record.

Louise's event will take place on Friday 30 July. Follow Louise on Instagram @louiseshanahan to stay up to date with her progress.

From everybody at the University of Cambridge Sports Service, we are incredibly proud and wish Louise the very best of luck.
