Men’s Varsity Set Point to win 38-36, CU Volleyball Club
This year's Volleyball Varsity saw many exciting plays, but the spectacle that Blues Men put on in the first set was hard to match. Normally, volleyball sets are played to 25 with two points clear and we rarely see the score go beyond 27 or 28. However, in the nail-biting finale of the first set, Blues Men played to 38-36, saving multiple set-points created by Oxford and securing an important lead in the last Varsity match of the day. What was described as some of the highest level volleyball seen at the Varsity matches in a very long time resulted in a 5-set victory for Blues Men and an overall 3-1 victory for Cambridge.
Cai La Trobe-Roberts (Jesus) Men’s Varsity Hat-Trick, CU Association Football Club
Last year Cai struggled with a serious concussion which affected his studies and football. He also had a heart problem induced by the concussion which kept him sidelined for most of Michaelmas, however returning to CUAFC in the latter stages of the season, he still managed to finish top scorer in the Blues BUCS league. To top off his comeback, Cai scored 3 and assisted the other in Cambridge’s first Varsity men’s win since 2019 at the Abbey stadium.
Calum Brown (Pembroke) Men’s Varsity Goal, CU Hockey Club
Calum Brown intercepts an opposition pass at The Men’s Blues Varsity Match and makes an outstanding run from inside our own half dribbling past half their team, makes a beautiful reverse stick hit past the Oxford keeper into the goal, topped off with a quite lovely celebration as well to help us win varsity. Played an amazing match all-round and won man of the match to top it all off.
Rob Tombs (Jesus) Varsity save and subsequent pass leading to a goal, CU Mixed Lacrosse Club
A standout moment from the Mixed Lacrosse Blues Varsity match was an exceptional clear by goalkeeper Rob Tombs. After making a save from an opposition player, Rob launched the ball with incredible power and accuracy all the way to the opposite end of the pitch, landing it directly into the stick of an attacker. The attacker quickly moved the ball on to another teammate, who fired a shot past the Oxford goalkeeper to score. This moment epitomised Rob’s impact on the game as his clears and saves were crucial throughout, earning him the title of overall MVP for Mixed Varsity. Among many highlights, this play was a defining moment in an outstanding performance.
