It was a day of mixed fortunes at the Varsity Matches yesterday, when the Light Blue women lost 3-0 in a closely fought contest but the men’s team came home with the trophy.
Despite Cambridge dominating the last 10 minutes of the women’s match, Oxford’s defence (and 236 tackles) saw them through to the final whistle, upsetting the odds after Cambridge’s record win of 52-0 in 2015.
In the men’s match CURUFC won for the first time since 2009, defeating Oxford 23-18. Tries from Mike Phillips and Rory Triniman (including a tense few minutes when one of Rory’s tries was deliberated by the officials before being allowed), as well as a huge input from Fraser Gillies, meant that the trophy was finally lifted by the Light Blues for the first time in seven years.
A huge congratulations to both of our teams on their valiant efforts, and to Oxford for providing such intense and exciting competition!
