CUBC’s results from this weekend’s British Rowing Senior Championships represent a positive performance at this milestone event as the squad works towards the 2019 Boat Race on April 7th 2019, says Chief Coach Rob Baker. Baker added, “to get out and race top level competition is a key part of our preparation for the Boat Race, and I’m happy that the squad acquitted themselves well this weekend. We have only just started our Boat Race journey and the major work and developments will be done in the hard yards over the next 5 months”.
The headline result was the Club’s win in the open 4-, with both President Dara Alizadeh (Hughes Hall) and Vice President Freddie Davidson (Emmanuel) in the boat. Alizadeh, who moved into the boat the day before racing, commented “I’m happy with the result today. I thought the squad showed good depth and toughness, digging it out against some tough opposition. It was good to put ourselves in a competitive situation and have a solid performance. We’re now looking ahead, and will all be back in the gym on Monday to consolidate and work towards Fours Head”.
Davidson and Alizadeh were joined by 2018 Goldie winner Callum Sullivan, and 2016 Olympian and Cal alumnus Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk (Peterhouse) in a boat that led from start to finish, clearing the line 6 seconds ahead of the 2nd place boat from OUBC. The second CUBC crew of Reggie Mitchell (Trinity), Grant Bitler (Hughes Hall), Jonty Page (Pembroke), and Dave Bell (Homerton) went stroke for stroke for 3rd place with Oxford Brookes A, but came out the wrong side of a bow-ball margin, placing 4th.
CUBC’s next racing will be at the Fuller’s Brewery Fours Head on November 3rd, where it will seek to maintain its 3 year winning streak in the Championship Coxed 4.
