LAWN TENNIS - Varsity 2013 Match Report

The Cambridge Men’s Blues travelled down to the national tennis centre at Roehampton for the 123rd annual Varsity Tennis Match, which saw a dogged and determined Cambridge retain the Doherty Cup, beating Oxford for the eighth year in a row.

The singles was a tight-fought affair, with Oxford racing to a 3 matches to 1 lead, and taking sets in both of the final 2 singles matches. Cambridge fought back to take both third set matches, leaving the match 3 rubbers all on Monday night. Similarly on Tuesday morning, the singles were split 3-3, all suggesting that the match was going to be determined by the 9 doubles matches.

Cambridge, who have been traditionally more dominant in doubles, shined through, winning the first round of doubles 2-1, taking momentum into Tuesday evening, leading the match 8:7. Wednesday was another tight affair, but Cambridge battled to win 4 out of the final 6 doubles matches, giving the Light Blues the match 12-9. This extended the Varsity streak to 8 in a row for the Cambridge Men’s Blues.
Many thanks to Sven Sylvester, Men's Captain, for this report.
