The Inaugural World Elite University Football Tournament

CUAFC are currently in China, taking part in the first ever World Elite University Football Tournament (WEUFT).

Starting yesterday and running until the 8th August, 8 teams are competing in this exciting new tournament. CUAFC’s group includes the University of Melbourne, the Hong Kong Technical University and the hosts Tsinghua University. The second group comprises Oxford, the University of Southern California, Peking University and Renmin University of China.

The tournament opened to an "Olympic-like" march past of the teams around the running track surrounding the pitch and to the cheers of several thousand spectators. CUAFC were lucky enough to have been picked for the first game, which was broadcast live on Internet TV. Despite the jet lag and 90% humidity the Light Blues revelled in the atmosphere, beating the hosts of the tournament Tsinghua University 3-2, in a game which they mostly dominated.

The opening ceremony was attended by several Chinese dignitaries including education ministers and senior Chinese FA personnel. Talks are already in place about trying to make this an annual event to bring elite universities to China to complement their desire to develop their young footballers.
