A golden weekend for CUBC athletes and alumni at World Rowing Cup 3 in Lucerne

CUBC athletes and alumni raced in 5 events at this weekend’s final of the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, and came away with 5 golds.

Imogen Grant made her return to international racing after the 2021 Olympics, rowing in the lightweight single. Imogen’s dominance was complete – in heat, semi, and final she was never headed, and topped the weekend with a world best time for the LW1x.

Tom George and Ollie Wynne Griffith, coached by CUBC Men’s Chief Coach Rob Baker, looked to turn around their HRR result, where they were defeated by Macintosh and Macdonald of New Zealand. Along with Imogen Grant, they won their heat, semi, and final, showing a great change of pace. Their final showdown more than turned over their Henley result, pushing the NZ pair to 4th, and leading the medallists Australia and Romania by clear water.

Women’s Blue Boat 7 seat Grace Prendergast returned to the New Zealand National Team after training at Ely with pair partner Kerri Gowler. The relatively limited time in the pair did not affect the New Zealanders as they quickly returned to their Olympic Championship form, taking a not-unexpected win.

CUBC alumni played a strong part in the regatta, with 2020 President Freddie Davidson stroking the GB 4- that defeated the Olympic champion Australian 4-. After a 5 second victory in their heat, taking them straight to the A-Final, Davidson and his crew took the lead with a massive push in the final 500 metres and were clear winners in the sprint to the line.

Former Blue Boat cox Henry Fieldman drove his men in the GB 8+ to a famous victory, leading from start to finish in a clear water win over Australia and Germany. Laying down a 1:19 first 500, the British crew controlled the race from 250 metres into the race. Coached by former CUBC Men’s Chief Coach Steve Trapmore, the crew secured GB’s overall win in the World Rowing points tally.
