Fastest Women's Crew at Quintin Head

CUWBC opened their 2017 racing at Quintin Head on Saturday fielding the fastest women’s crew of the event, finishing 21 seconds of any other women’s boat.

The A crew, entered in the elite category, set off behind the University of London Boat Club. Despite initially getting stuck behind some veteran crews, CUWBC overtook ULBC in the first third of the race to then move away. CUWBC and ULBC will come head-to-head again on 19 February in a pre-Boat Race fixture. Speaking after the race, crew member Anna Dawson, Newnham, said “Ultimately, it was an encouraging performance. We were able to experience all sorts of conditions. We identified some technical aspects which we will look to improve going into our next set of races.”

Meanwhile, the B crew posted a strong time to finish 2nd in the Senior category and 4th overall out of the women’s crews. "While we had some tough and challenging parts of the race, with strong headwinds and varying conditions, there was a complete focus and composure when making a move to overtake BMS and Radley College as well as a determined push as a crew from Chiswick bridge right to the finish." Paula Wulff, Churchill.

The CUWBC lightweights raced in the Intermediate 1 category, finishing 4th in their category. “The race got off to an aggressive start which we carried through the race plan. The crew continued to press on into the headwind as we dropped the boat behind us. It was good to be back racing and the lightweights have an exciting platform to build on in upcoming weeks.” Akil Hasmi, Robinson.

The Quintin Head marked the start of a busy few months for CUWBC with fixtures, GB trials and other racing ahead of the Boat Races on 26 March and 2 April.

The Henley Boat Races take place on Sunday 26 March 2017.
The Cancer Research UK Boat Races take place on Sunday 2 April 2017.
