Cup Success for the Blues
This Wednesday, the Blues faced University of Exeter in the second round of the cup after beating Queen Mary on penalties last term. Despite the wet and muddy conditions, the Blues got off to a good start as Isabel Luetkenherm continued her goal-scoring ways and slotted the ball past the Exeter keeper. However, Exeter responded and equalised only 10 minutes later. The Blues maintained possession well though, with great through balls from Zoe Cohen and Katy Edwards in the midfield to the strikers and wingers. Jen Atherton received the ball in the final third and neatly placed it through the keeper’s legs to make it 2-1. Exeter kept the pressure on and some good play between the striker and midfielders led to their second goal of the game. With half-time approaching, Liz Ashcroft beat the last defender and lobbed the keeper, making the score 3-2 at the break.
Determined to secure the win, Cambridge returned to the pitch for a competitive second half of the game. The Blues maintained possession well, with nice link up play between the defence and midfield, but it was a tense half with neither team giving away easy chances. In the 75th minute, Exeter’s striker drove the ball into the final third, dribbled it around keeper Laura Bleehen and equalised. However, the Blues soon regained the lead as Daisy Luff sent a ball in from the left wing which Liz received and put past the Exeter keeper only a minute later. With Laura blocking any attempts to equalise by Exeter, the game finished 4-3 to Cambridge! They will face Worcester in the quarter final on the 21st February at home.
