CUAFC Match report 07/02/17
On Wednesday, the Blues played their first home game of the second half of the season against University of Nottingham who are currently top of the league. Nottingham got off to a strong start with a through ball being played down the middle to their striker who slotted the ball past keeper Laura Bleehen into the bottom left corner. They soon doubled their lead when a ball over the top landed on the edge of the box – the player took a touch and neatly put it into the back of the net. However, the Blues did well to catch the opposition offside a lot and created a couple of chances. Sophia D’Angelo sent a through ball to Jen Atherton, whose shot was saved by their keeper. Shortly after, another ball landed at Jen in front of goal but unfortunately the shot was deflected. Nottingham scored another goal to make it 0-3 at half-time.
Nottingham started the second half strongly with a quick goal from the left but the Blues remained positive and had some particularly good play down the left wing when Gerda Bachrati overlapped Daisy Luff and crossed the ball into the box on several occasions. There was also success on the right as Sophia picked up the ball and got a powerful shot off which went just over the bar. Jen had another chance but her shot from the edge of the box went just wide of the post. However, Nottingham scored a fifth goal in which one of their players controlled the Blues’ goal-kick and blasted the ball into the back of the net. In the final 15 minutes of the game, Nottingham scored one more but the Blues did not give up and Isabel headed the ball from Natalie Faktor’s corner past the Nottingham keeper to get one back for the Blues. Not long after, she scored another great goal from outside of the box and the ball soared over the keeper, making the Blues the only team in the league to score two goals against Nottingham. Final score: 2-6.
