14/11/2018 by Cristina Gómez
Location: UEA Sportspark
Final Score: 31-46
Squad: Carla Ríos, Cristina Gómez, Mie Monti, Drew Chateau, Saffron Hicks, Nicola Duffy, Annie Lyons, Becky Illingworth, Aicha Massrali, Nadya Pohran
Last Wednesday saw the Blues travel to UEA for an early afternoon game. Travelling without a coach, but confident they could win, the Cambridge side showed excellent teamwork, with a particularly strong defensive game.
It took 4 minutes for the Blues to open the score board in the first quarter, but once they begun, they kept up a steady flow of baskets that allowed them to open a 10 point gap by the end of the period. Becky Illingworth, Mie Monti and Saffron Hicks each scored 4 points while point guard Annie Lyons joined them with a field goal late in the quarter. Despite the great offense, what really stood out in these 10 minutes was the overpowering defence, which left the hosts at only 2 points.
The second quarter saw the Blues play their best basketball so far, with 7 different players contributing to the score, for an 18-8 run. Nadya Pohran carried the bulk of the scoring this time, while Drew Chateau, Aicha Massrali and Carla Ríos got their first points in the game. Again, communication in defence was key to close the first half of the game with a 20 point lead at 10-30.
The 3rd and 4th quarters saw the Blues begin to tire out, as they allowed 21 points from the rivals in this half, while scoring only 16. However, despite this dip in performance, the Cambridge side came away with a 15 point victory and returned home satisfied.
Currently occupying the 4th place in the BUCS Midlands 1A League, the Blues will be hosting King's College London for the first round of BUCS Trophy on Wednesday 21st at 18:20.
