NETBALL - Jays vs Loughborough and Blues vs Worcester

Jays vs Loughborough 3rds

GK: Kate Garden GD: Becca Hitchings WD: Kate Garnett C: Catrin Bush
WA: Becky Haggie GA: Emily Elliott GS: Fran Jenkins Subs: Zoe Evans, Megan Lockey, Elly Harrison

The Jays set off from the drizzle of Cambridge for their second BUCS Wednesday to play Loughborough 3rds on their extraordinary home turf aka ‘the netball centre’. While some of us woke up with butterflies for the upcoming match, GD Becca Hitchings woke up excited to snoop around their facilities. Fortunately we weren’t so intimidated when we arrived when we saw the (almost) Cambridge Blue sports hall walls. This was followed by a good warm up and a fairly dominant first half, with the scores neck and neck. Brilliant play from the defensive circle (Becca and players player, Kate Garden) picked off ball after ball of the Loughborough attack. Pressure was put on the Jays getting it out of defence leading to frustration but the girls worked hard using front cuts and making sure there is always more than one option. Half time hit us and the pressure was still on, we hadn’t pulled away but stayed positive. We had no changes which was a challenge to our fitness, and was possibly the reason for dropping 5 points behind by the end of the third quarter.

Calm words from captain Trin urged us to keep our cool – and a complete sub on of Zoe Evans (WA), Megan Lockey (WD) and Elly Harrison (GS) gave an injection of new energy in the final quarter. Sadly we still couldn’t turn the tide of Loughborough finishing the game 44-34 to them. Despite this all agreed that it was a good match with some nice passages of play – and makes us all excited to come back and smash them next time round!

Blues vs Worcester

In the Blues second match of the season, Cambridge got off to a rocky start falling two goals behind in the first quarter. Throughout the match Cambridge would gradually pull it back to equalize, but unfortunately Worcester were still leading by 2 as the final whistle blew at 36-38. The Blues were looking strong in defence, with Lucy, a new star in the Blues squad, starting as GK, Charlotte as GD, and Hayley as WD who was awarded Player of the Match. Charlotte and Hayley were a dazzling duo, and worked hard to break down the attacking play of the tall GA and the incredibly speedy WA. Tara came on as GK at half time, and dominated the circle making countless interceptions. Our sprinter of the team, Emily, who captained the Blues last season, started as C. Emma started as WA, Maddy as GA, and Frances new Blues Captain as GS. Maddy is an invaluable new addition to the Blues squad, who played for the Jays last season. A quick switch around in the second quarter saw Frances move into GA and Izzy come on as GS. Emily and Emma really nailed their circle edge drives and feeds, and the Cambridge attack worked well around the circle against some incredibly feisty Worcester defenders. Nicky came on as WA in the second half, and made some fantastic changes of direction and drives for the ball. This was an unfortunate loss for Cambridge, but wins are definitely on the horizon for this newly formed team!

Final score: 36-38
