Cambridge University Judo Club (CUJC) has an innovative solution to increasing the accessibility of sport at Cambridge, whilst promoting sustainability and supporting the local community!
CUJC has launched an exciting and forward-thinking initiative, that limits waste by recycling unused judo equipment. The new scheme replaces the brand-new basic quality gi (judo suit) that is no longer provided as part of the British Judo Association Student Voucher Scheme.
The idea was simple: the Gi Donation scheme involved existing members donating kit they no longer used and was taking up space at home. Minor repairs were made where necessary and members then tried on the kit before training, donating what they could afford in return.
As any seasoned judoka will tell you, finding a kit that fits correctly can be tricky business! The beauty of the new scheme is that it allowed the possibility to mix and match different brands, to find the size and style that fits best.
At the launch of the Gi Donation Scheme, new and existing members were able to access affordable kit, made possible by the generous donations from the Judo community. Many of these donations also gave new members the opportunity to invest in significantly better-quality kit than the previous basic quality gis available.
Cambridge University Judo Club were ecstatic to be able to facilitate this event for its members. What’s more is the Gi Donation Event raised more than £500 for the charity Foodcycle (www.foodcycle.org.uk), who provide community meals using surplus food.
