That's a wrap for 2023-24 - what a year it's been!
Whilst the weather did its best to disrupt this year’s cricket season, we did see some action with the Men’s Blues, Women’s Blues, and Men’s Crusaders (second team) all representing the Light Blues!
With this, Cambridge teams have completed a total of 570 BUCS fixtures this year during the league and knockout season – congratulations to everyone who played a part in a highly successful year!
BUCS Events
Easter term is always packed with BUCS events, and this year was no different! CU Powerlifting set the tone at the start of term, with an impressive 5 medals at the BUCS Championships, including gold medals for Brandon Teh (Magdalene) and Allaya Rasul (Corpus Christi). UCAPP athlete Anna Basford (Emmanuel) and Tads Ciecierski-Holmes (Wolfson) both won individual and team gold medals at the Modern Pentathlon Championships, alongside teammate Rudi Brujin-Yard (Downing), who took home the individual bronze medal.
41 crews, 6 medals, and 3 great days of racing at BUCS Regatta was next up for the Light Blues! Jesus College Boat Club raced alongside Cambridge University Boat Club athletes, earning Cambridge an overall 4th place finish in the Victor Ludorum and 3rd in the Women’s standing! Over the same action packed bank holiday weekend, Cambridge University Athletics and Hare and Hounds members headed up to Manchester for the BUCS Outdoor Championships. With a presence across a host of finals, Cambridge athletes finished with a full set of medals;
Gold – Niamh Bridson Hubbard (Magdalene), 5000m
Silver – Terry Fawden (Wolfson), 3000m Steeplechase
Bronze – Thomas Dugre (Jesus), 3000m Steeplechase
UCAPP athlete and recent Sports Person of the Year Winner, Phoebe Barker (Robinson), also picked up a silver medal in the 10,000M over the weekend!
Down on the South Coast, Julianna Nowaczek (Trinity) and Lauren Hattaway (Lucy Cavendish) served up a bronze medal at the Beach Volleyball Championship, adding to an already successful season for CUVC! To wrap up a successful term UCAPP athlete Will Lowden (Fitzwilliam) took home a bronze medal at the BUCS Cycling Road Race Championship, while fellow CU Cycling members Maddie Angwin (John’s) and Matt Rizzo-Naudi (Selwyn) both earnt bronze medals at the 10mile Time Trial Championship!
With the BUCS action almost coming to a close for 2023-24, we wish CU Triathlon members the best of luck for their Standard Championship this weekend, as well as students entering the BUCS Full Bore Championships next month! Also this weekend is the 134th Lawn Tennis Match at Fenners Sports Ground, as well as Cricket Varsity’s at Arundel Castle – check out CULTC’s and Blues Cricket’s social media channels for details on how to support!
