Historic homecoming for Blues football in 2026 Varsity

Cambridge football made a triumphant return to Grange Road for the 2025/2026 Blues Varsity matches this month. Drawing a capacity crowd of 1,900 supporters to the newly established Mumford Pitch, the Cambridge University Association Football Club season showpieces represented the 141st Men’s and 40th Women’s Varsity clashes between Cambridge and their Oxford rivals.

Men’s Blues: doing "the double” | Cambridge 1–0 Oxford

> 19:00 kick-off, 20 March 2026

The Men’s Blues secured a deserved 1–0 victory, completing a historic season "double" by winning both the league – and with it promotion back to Tier 1 - and the Varsity title

Captain Deniz Ozer scored the decisive goal in only the third minute, providing an early advantage that set the stage for a match of high intensity and physicality. Cambridge controlled the game with great discipline, holding onto the lead under pressure. Tom Craddock was named the GCS Player of the Match for his role in a resolute defence that prevented Oxford from creating clear-cut chances.

Reflecting on the victory and his tenure with the club, Ozer said: "The boys are absolutely buzzing with the result and it’s a testament to the hard work and commitment shown throughout the season. Defensively we were very solid... at the same time, we created some excellent chances going forward. On another day the scoreline could have been more convincing. Huge credit to Tom Blatch as coach throughout the season. We approached the game with a clear plan and everyone understood their individual roles perfectly. A big emphasis in the last two years has been about approaching Varsity with a defensive mindset and it has paid off. The performance really reflects the standards we’ve set for ourselves. To finish the season having done the double is a fantastic achievement for the group. Captaining the side has been a privilege and a proud way to end my three years at Cambridge".

Women’s Blues: quality shines through in a technical contest | Cambridge 1–2 Oxford

> 16:00 kick-off, 20 March 2026

The Women’s Blues took part in one of the most technical and closely contested Varsity match-ups in years. Although the match finished in a narrow 2–1 loss for the home side, the performance highlighted the immense progress made under coach Ahmad Ansari

The standout moment for Cambridge was a goal of exceptional quality in the 70th minute. Following intricate link-up passing in the final third, Christiana Wayne produced a clean finish, lifting the ball over the Oxford goalkeeper. Despite dominating the midfield and pressuring the Oxford defence in the second half, the Light Blues were unable to find a late equaliser. Oxford’s Jordan Di Verniero was named GCS Player of the Match.

Framing the contest within a strong season where the team finished third in the Midlands Tier 1 League, Women's Captain Lara Branston said: "The 40th Women’s Blues Varsity Match was a highlight of the sporting calendar this year, with the team carrying serious momentum into Varsity. With our previous league clash ending 2–1 in favour of Oxford, and standing one place behind them in the league table, the squad was eager to rise to the challenge and face one of the strongest Oxford sides of recent years for the title. The opening minutes of the game saw us come out strong, with early threats down the left wing. As the half progressed, we faced increasingly dangerous attacking chances from Oxford, culminating in a goal, with the half ending 1–0 to the dark blues. The second half saw a good response from the team, yet with 20 minutes to go, Oxford capitalised on another chance to extend their lead to 2–0. Soon after, with fresh energy from their substitutions, we pressed up the pitch and, following a strike from Christiana Wayne, pulled one back. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to equalise in the final stretch of the game. The match was a true battle, and one of the closest women’s Varsity match-ups in years. We put in a stellar effort and fought incredibly hard. We will look to reclaim the Varsity title in the 2027 matches!"

A state-of-the-art return to Grange Road

The fixture represented a homecoming to a site with deep historical significance. While the University’s football roots stretch back to CUAFC’s founding in 1856 and early games at Parker’s Piece, this was never an ideal home for welcoming the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Corinthians for, as one contemporary account puts it, “anyone could walk across the ground during the match”. Consequently, CUAFC and the Rugby Club (CURUFC) eventually leased land at Grange Road as a shared home in 1895. Although the football club moved to Fenner’s Cricket Ground in the 1970s, where it remained for nearly 50 years, the opening of the Mumford Pitch has facilitated a permanent return to the site.

The current 3G artificial pitch was established in late 2025 following a generous donation by Hugh Mumford (Downing College, 1964) and other rugby and football alumni. This all-weather surface allows for 80 hours of weekly use, a major increase from the 10-hour limit of the previous grass surface, serving both University teams and the local community. The club's return is immortalised with “CUAFC” engraved in sandstone above the historic pedestrian entrance on Grange Road. Grange Road is the 17th different venue to host the Men's Varsity match since 1874 and the 8th for the Women since 1986. Previous venues have included Premier League grounds and Wembley, which hosted the fixture on 36 occasions.

Honours and Club Milestones

The matches took place during a period of reflection for the club, which is recognised as the oldest in the world. This year saw the departure of Simon Cornish, who stepped down as Senior Treasurer after years of dedicated service to the club’s development. The club also mourned the passing of Life President Dr John Little in January, a figure whose involvement in Cambridge football spanned over four decades. On the pitch, the club continues to thrive as an amalgamated entity following the merger of the men’s and women’s clubs in the 2019/2020 season.
