Sports Awards 2026 - Sports Person of the Year

Aimi Weightman, Murray Edwards, CU Hare and Hounds

Aimi Weightman had an incredible cross country season which she started in November finishing 7th at the Liverpool cross challenge which acted as the trial race for the European cross country championships, she missed out on selection for the GB team by 1 spot making her 1st reserve for the U23 women’s GB team. Later in the season, representing Cambridge at BUCS cross country championships, she finished 4th in the extremely competitive A race ahead of numerous international athletes. This performance secured her selection to compete for team GB at the ISU world university cross country championships in Italy. In the 10k course she finished 8th.

Aimi's season has shown that she can compete strongly not just against the best in the country but the best in the world too.

Outside of cross country she is a talented track runner, last summer, while still returning from a long-term injury, she ran a huge five-second PB in the 1500m of 4:22.18.

Freya Moody, Newnham, CU Women’s Lacrosse Club

Freya has been an incredible captain of CUWLC this year: leading the Blues to the national quarter-final of BUCS, scoring 60+ goals in just 10 games, coaching both university teams, and umpiring matches to avoid forfeits. Off the pitch, she organises fitness, S&C, shooting sessions and team socials, while pushing for greater integration between the Blues and the 2s. At just 19, she earned her first senior cap and competed for GB against the Netherlands and Germany (as the youngest squad member). She fits fortnightly squad weekends and Tuesday evening sessions around CUWLC and a high-contact-hour Biological Natural Sciences degree, whilst almost never missing a session for any team. Back home, she helped Centaurs Lacrosse Club become European Champions, and coaches younger players at camps and one-to-one, sharing her infectious enthusiasm with the next generation. Freya gives so much to everyone around her, cares deeply, and is constantly full of life. She is an inspiration to us all.

Joseph Hee, Hughes Hall, CU Table Tennis Club

Joseph Hee has delivered an extraordinary year defined by dominance, leadership, and transformative impact. As Captain of the Blues Team this year, and the club’s top seed for two consecutive years, he has set the benchmark for elite performance. His standout achievement came at BUCS Individuals, where he finished 2nd despite being seeded 31st, dismantling a field of highly ranked opponents in a run that showcased exceptional composure and skill. Across the BUCS campaign, he was completely undefeated in Varsity, the BUCS League, and the Conference Cup, where he led the team to victory: an emphatic demonstration of his superiority.

Beyond results, Joseph has transformed the club. He has raised the technical standard of the squad, increased participation, founded the Hughes Hall Table Tennis Club, and coached players free of charge. A central figure in decision-making, he embodies elite sport: excelling individually while elevating everyone around him.

Sannah Zaman, Homerton, CU Cycling Club

Sannah has excelled at BUCS this year, including winning an individual bronze medal at BUCS hill climb from a huge field, and helped Cambridge women take home the silver medal. She was also an instrumental part of the three-person Cambridge team that won silver at BUCS team time trial, and the four-person team that came 4th at the BUCS Track Team Pursuit. Beyond BUCS, Sannah races internationally for O'Shea Red Chilli Bikes, where she has put in some excellent performances in elite level races, competing against professionals in world-tour level teams.

Will Lowden, Fitzwilliam, CU Cycling Club

Will has continued to excel as one of (if not the) best university cyclist this year. He won the BUCS 25-mile individual time trial by over a minute and a half; came 4th out of a huge field of 190 men at BUCS hill climb, helping to secure Cambridge the team gold; and was part of the team of three that won the BUCS Team Time Trial, playing an instrumental role in the team's very convincing victory of almost two minutes. Beyond BUCS, he also reached the highest level on the national scene, winning the U23 National Circuit Time Trial (and coming second in the overall competition). Overall, he has been very instrumental in CUCC's success at BUCS!

Previously during his time at Cambridge, Will established himself as one of the University’s leading endurance athletes, becoming a multiple BUCS champion in the 10- & 25-mile time trials, a Varsity Duathlon champion, a two-time British National Circuit Champion, and a record-breaking time trialist. Nationally, he rose to become Britain’s top-ranked U23 time trialist and second overall, while also achieving top 10 national status in duathlon after winning both the British and World Age Group Qualifiers outright. Over his time at Cambridge, Will has won over 50 BUCS points for the University – the equivalent to a team winning their BUCS league in the highest division.

Beyond podiums, Will leads by example—demonstrating resilience, discipline, and a deep commitment to his sport. His contributions continue to inspire those around him and raise the bar for Cambridge sport.

Will’s record-breaking performances and all-round excellence make him a standout nominee for Cambridge Sportsperson of the Year.
