CRICKET - Cambridge MCCU crowned BUCS Cricket Champions
Friday 24 June 2011
The Cambridge MCCU team continued their impressive season with a fantastic 100 run victory over defending champions Cardiff in the BUCS one-day cricket final at Wormsley Cricket Ground this week. The terrible weather of Wednesday morning threatened to disrupt the match but the dedication of grounds man, Simon Tremlin, enabled the teams take to the field at 2pm.
The match, reduced to 42 overs per side, saw Cambridge in to bat first. The side had reached a positive 93 for 4 before Rob Woolley came to the crease. Man of the Match, Woolley hit an excellent 67 from 58 balls to help Cambridge set a challenging total of 239 for 6.
Cambridge fielded exceptionally well, making life very difficult for the defending champions. Cowan and Best bowled brilliantly returning figures of 3 - 18 and 3 - 39 respectively. A run out finally finished the Cardiff innings leaving Cambridge to celebrate a terrific win.
Tim Munton, Warwickshire and England cricketer and Phil Green Director of Sport at Solent and BUCS Sports Management Group Chairman awarded the BUCS one-day Cricket Champions trophy to delighted Cambridge MCCU side.
