Athlete Profile - Lucy Hart

Name: Lucy Hart

College: Clare

Studying: Veterinary Sciences

Previous School: Eggar's School, Alton; Alton College

When and how did you get into sport?

“I've always been sporty, I love trying to get better at something. For over 10 years I was focused on equestrian sport, particularly show jumping. After intermitting due to illness, I felt very weak so wanted to try and get stronger. I started CrossFit and loved lifting weights so once I had started back at Cambridge I joined the powerlifting club. I love competitions and was hooked after my first one.”

What are your top sporting achievements?

- Being on the British team for 3 years alongside my studies.

- 3rd in my weight class the British Championships 2019 & 2020.

- English Champion 2019.

What is your advice for balancing sport and academia?

“Be realistic! I'm so guilty of trying to do too much but over the years I've learnt to be more realistic. When training gets hard it takes a toll on you too so make sure you get some down time either a bit each day or one day in the week which is quieter than the others.”

What has the support from UCAPP meant to you?

“It's been amazing to have the university backing me trying to pursue high level sport alongside my degree. All the support services have been so great. Rather than questioning if I should be spending so much time on sport I've felt more focused this year and better able to balance sport and studies. I'm very grateful to the UCAPP scheme and all the people involved in supporting us athletes.”
