BUCS Nationals Round Up and Knockout Preview

Light Blue success at BUCS Nationals and looking ahead to National Knockouts!

 

BUCS Nationals Recap

3 days, 6 sports, and 133 entries for Cambridge students at this year’s flagship BUCS events weekend in Sheffield! Nationals weekend comprises of; fencing, climbing, badminton, swimming, indoor athletics, and karate, with Light Blue students representing in each event. With strong performance across the weekend, Cambridge students returned with 5 medals, making it the most successful nationals’ weekend in recent years!

Fencing Individual Championships: Ben MacLennan (Downing) and Rudi-Bruijn-Yard (Downing) won silver and bronze respectively in the Mixed Epee, while Madeline Yap (Robinson) won bronze in the Female Saber.  

Climbing Championships: Individual bronze for Katy Wong (Pembroke) and she combined with Martha Bowyer Killick (Newnham) and Jade Westfoot (St John's) to win a team silver medal in the Women's team event!  

Karate Championships: Jasmine Pomeroy (Robinson) won silver in the Female Senior Kumite, with Amelie Charlton (Girton) picking up bronze in the Female Novice Kumite.

Swimming Long Course Championship: Emilia Magliocco (King’s) and Sophie Moore (St John’s) both reached multiple A-finals over the weekend, with CUSWPC members also competing in six B-finals.

National Knockouts

This week also sees the return of our National Knockout competitions, following the conclusion of a number of league seasons earlier this month. Fencing W1, Fencing M1, Hockey W1, Lacrosse W1, Squash M1, Squash W1, Tennis W1, and Volleyball W1 have all qualified through the league part of the season and will have their sights set on BUCS Big Wednesday at the end of March!

Kicking off this Wednesday (18th), both our male and female first team fencers are in action at the Sports Centre (13:00), while Lacrosse Women’s 1s are also at home against Loughborough (St John’s College Playing Fields, 14:00). Women’s first team volleyball are the only team playing in the Championship away from home this week, with the remainder of our teams starting their campaign’s the following week.
