BUCS Michaelmas Roundup 2025!

Success for the Light Blues this Michaelmas, as Cambridge impressed across BUCS leagues, knockouts and national events

Leagues and Knockouts

Cambridge entered an impressive 57 teams into the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) League and Knockout programmes this season. Among the entries were  new teams Table Tennis Men’s 2 and Football Women’s 3, both of whom enjoyed successful Michaelmas terms, securing their first-ever BUCS victories early in the year.

With nearly 300 fixtures completed across the University, four teams currently sit top of their respective leagues: Football Men’s 1, Hockey Men’s 2, Netball Women’s 4, and Ultimate Women’s 1 — with the latter two remaining unbeaten so far.

Michaelmas also brought strong performances from the Light Blues in BUCS knockout competitions. Twelve teams will resume their campaigns next term, before attention turns to our Premier Division sides and the highly anticipated start of the BUCS National Championships. Fencing Women’s 1/Men’s 1, Hockey Women’s 1/Men’s 1, Lacrosse Women’s 1, Volleyball Women’s 1, and Tennis Women’s 1 all await confirmation of their National Championship opponents following the conclusion of league play in February.

Events

Away from league competition, Michaelmas saw the Light Blues return to several of our favourite BUCS events with notable success.

Joseph Hee delivered an outstanding performance at the BUCS Table Tennis Championships, claiming a silver medal after knocking out multiple seeded players on his route to the final. Cambridge University Cycling Club also enjoyed an excellent outing at the BUCS Hill Climb, with Sannah Zaman and George Spooner both securing individual silver medals, alongside strong team performances in both categories:

  • Open Team (Gold): George Spooner, Will Lowden, Isaac Oliver

  • Female Team (Silver): Sannah Zaman, Lucy Havard

The Light Blues were also well represented across a wide range of individual and team events, including BUCS Short Course Swimming, the Short Range Rifle Championships, and team competitions in Touch Rugby, Indoor Ultimate, Korfball, and Handball.

After the winter break, we look forward to another packed term of Winning Wednesdays, individual medals, BUCS Nationals, and much more.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2026!
