Become a Run Leader

Running Groups for the University of Cambridge Staff

What are we proposing?

To develop a network of running groups for University Staff. These would be led by trained Run Leaders from University Departments, Schools and Divisions with central guidance and support provided by the Sports Service. In order to be in a position to launch this initiative effectively in the Easter Term 2019, the Sports Service is proposing to organise a Run Leaders course in March 2019. Initially there will be 24 places available on the England Athletics “Leadership in Running Fitness” course.

All leaders are trained and insured by England Athletics, the National Governing Body (NGB) for athletics and running.

The Leadership in Running Fitness course will enable Leaders to deliver fun and safe sessions to multi-ability groups and give advice and support to the new runner, as well as developing pathways for those that want to progress. It focuses on understanding and overcoming barriers to participation in running and how to increase participation by those not traditionally attracted to a running club.

The running groups will also link with the “Couch to 5k” program which is a government led national campaign which helps the runners in keeping them enthused outside of the group led sessions and adds to the sustainability of the program.

What is on offer and how to get involved?

The Sports Service will contribute the following:

Provide 50% of the cost for the Leadership in Running Fitness course.

Organise and run the course at the University Sports Centre.

Tool kits will also be available for Leaders which will include everything from getting the group started to resources on keeping the groups engaged. The Sports Service will also provide a mentor that will be able to support the Run Leaders.

Organise the running course

The commitment needed from the Department, School or Division:
