TABLE TENNIS - Cambridge take five titles

Sunday 31 January 2010

CUTTC won five titles at the CDTTL League Invitation Tournament this weekend.

The day began with the classic Drawn Doubles and Handicap events. Raphael Assier pulled off an impressive feat, winning in excess of twenty points in a row to snatch a victory against a junior, but failed to progress further. Hamish Yeung faced similar problems as he conceded two net-balls, leaving him to win forty points in a row.

The Women's singles and doubles started early, and number one seed, Sasha Tsai, overcame nerves with the help of unreserved support from her team-mates to get to the final where she beat the number two seed 3-1,with impressive two winged attack. The bar was set higher as Tsai teamed up with Vanda Ho to win the Women's doubles.

In the Men's singles and doubles draw, the top five University players and top two pairings were placed in the same half. Assier, Drake, Kittipassorn and Speed fell victim to the unlucky draw, losing in the last sixteen/thirty two stages. Yeung fell to last year's finalist Daniel Fielding despite some spectacular topspin rallies. Hall defeated tricky player Shaun Murray, then Tim Avis and grafted a win against Fielding, all 3-1 to make it into the final. He cruised past Martin Freeland 3-0 to retain the title from last year.

The mixed doubles saw Hamish Yeung pair up with Tsai to defeat team-mates Ky Nguyen and Hall in a close fought final. In the Men's doubles, Kittipassorn and Drake defeated Speed and Assier in a nail-bittingly close deuce in the fifth match before losing to doubles experts Yeung and Hall. They then give a solid performance, taking the title for Cambridge from Ben Roberts and Hall.

CUTTC won five titles in total - Men's singles/doubles, Women's singles/doubles, mixed doubles.
