RUGBY FIVES - Double Gold for CURFC at the British Universities Championships

CURFC sent a squad of 5 players to the British Universities and Student Fives Championships (BUSF): Ed Kay, Ben Beltrami, Matt Shaw, Andrew Boyd and Jeremy Manger. Ed Kay was defending his Singles title from 2015; Ben & Matt were defending the Doubles title they had won the previous two years.

Freshmen Jeremy and Andrew had tough 1st and 2nd round Singles matches, gaining valuable experience in the process. Matt reached the semi-finals where he met and lost to Ed; Ben defeated two former National Schools champions on his way to the final. In the final, a repeat of 2015, Ed was in imperious form, beating Ben 15-5, 15-1.

In the Doubles Jeremy gained more useful experience paired up with two-time champion Inigo Ackland from Bristol University. Andrew Boyd played with Ed and together they reached the semi-finals, where they lost to fancied Bristol University pair Arnold & Parker. Ben & Matt meanwhile made their way comfortably to the final, where they defeated Arnold & Parker in straight games. It was Cambridge’s 11th victory in the Doubles since 2001. Cambridge was assured of being top of the team classification once more.
