ROWING - Gold and Bronze for CUWBC at European Universities Games

CUWBC competed at the European Universities Games in Zagreb, Croatia last week having qualified crews at the BUCS Regatta in May.

The Club sent an Eight, four of whom also raced in coxless pairs to race against crews from across Europe.

The CUWBC eight won the heat comfortably clocking the second fastest time across the two heats beating crews from Croatia, Switzerland, Germany and Russia. Unfortunately, the eight was unable to race in the final.

In the afternoon block of racing, CUWBC had 2 coxless pairs racing. CUWBC 1 comprised of Hannah Roberts (Jesus) and Myriam Goudet (Lucy Cavendish). CUWBC 2 of Imogen Grant (Trinity) and Ellie Hopgood (Girton) was originally entered as a lightweight boat, but due to no other entries was transferred to the openweight event.

The pairs raced well in their heat and were all set for an exciting final. Hannah & Myriam led from the start but were pushed hard to the line by the University of Heidelberg (Germany). The Cambridge pair put a final push on towards the line to open up clear water and take the gold. Meanwhile, the 2nd pairing of Imogen and Ellie were close behind and leading a crew from First Pavlov State Medical University (Russia) so picked up a second medal for CUWBC.

The crew has since moved on to China where they are competing at 2 competitions in addition to various cultural visits.
