DAY 1
Surrey won the toss and decided to bat. The students started well with Turnbull taking the wicket of Surrey opener, Wilson, in the first over. Pietersen took to the field at number 4 and hit two fours and two sixes before he was caught by Park off the bowling of Ansari for 30. Harinath scored an impressive 81 before he was run out and Jewell made 61 before falling victim to Ansari. The left-arm spinner, Ansari (Trinity Hall), will be absolutely delighted with his 5-33 haul. Surrey declared their first innings at 234-9
The opening partnership of Ackland (ARU) and Ansari gave Cambridge MCCUs a very positive start to their innings making 45 and 41 runs respectively. The home side reached a very respectable 101 before the first wicket fell. The students finished 151-4 at the close of play.
DAY 2
Day 2 saw the students put on an impressive display with the bat. Anglia Ruskin student, Craig Park settled the students with a well grafted 81 before being caught by Wilson off the bowling of van den Bergh. Homerton student, Paul Best made an impressive 150 off 181 balls to help the students to a total of 455 all out. Jewell was the pick of the Surrey bowlers with 5 for 49 with van den Bergh taking three wickets and Spriegel two. The Cambridge innings finished in time to force Surrey into bat again with the students holding a lead of 221. The evening session saw Peter Turnbull (ARU) take two early wickets to bring Pietersen back to the crease. Pietersen played some beautiful shots and there were no further wickets before the end of play on Day 2.
DAY 3
The students, perhaps sensing an upset, were very sprightly in the field during the morning session. Pietersen showed his international colours putting together a very classy display of batting before being bowled by Woolley just two runs shy of his half century. Harinath was caught by Woolley off the bowling of Best for 41 shortly after with the students took one further wicket before the lunch break. After lunch, Surrey’s middle order put up a good fight against the Cambridge bowling attack. However, when Edwards was dismissed by Poysden, Cambridge polished off the Surrey tail with relative ease putting them within a whisker of glory. The students were left with just 4 runs to claim a sensational victory and it was Ackland who did the honours hitting a boundary off the 3rd ball to the delight of the crowd.
