HOCKEY - Wanderers vs Occasionals

Monday 15 March 2010

The Wanderers entered this year’s varsity match on the back of an impressive run of results in the league, and high in confidence. Oxford though would present a somewhat greater challenge than we were used to, especially on an unfamiliar pitch, and it was no surprise to find ourselves having to absorb some early pressure; the bouncy nature of the pitch meant that the Wanderers struggled to hold onto the ball and failed to take control of the game from the back, but strong defensive work kept Oxford at bay. However as the game wore on so the team became more assured on the ball, and several decent chances were created, with the Oxford keeper forced into making some important saves. Shortly before half-time some good link-up play between the midfield and forwards resulted in James Charleston finding some space in the D and slotting the ball past the keeper to give Cambridge the lead.

Starting the second half the Wanderers were looking to build on their lead but sadly an early lapse in concentration saw Oxford equalise almost immediately. With the game back on level terms neither side was able to assert much authority on the game and chances were at a premium for the rest of the game, despite the best efforts of both sides. The second half was dominated by the defence of both teams, and it was no surprise to see Wanderers right back Mike Mclean win the man-of-the-match award. The game finished 1-1 which although disappointing was a fair result, and the team can be proud of their efforts.
