GYMNASTICS -Women's Varsity Match 2010

Sunday 21 February 2010

The Cambridge women’s gymnastics team keeps growing in depth year by year. After a relatively small squad last year, the 2009 intake meant that we were easily able to field a strong A team and B team in the Varsity competition, which took place on Sunday 21st February at Huntingdon Gymnastics Club.

The A team of Kate Bramall, Stephanie Bailey, Courtney Clark, Lucy Guile and Christy Lowe gave a good performance, with Kate finishing as the runner-up on Vault, Stephanie and Christy medalling on Floor, and Lucy, Kate and Christy achieving the necessary all-around scores to earn a half-blue.  However, injuries to four of the five gymnasts in the previous week meant that Cambridge did not have the liberty of dropping their lowest score on each event, and the A team competition was won by Oxford 207.9 – 192.6.

The B team competition was of an extremely high standard this year.  Competing on vault, beam and floor, the Cambridge team of Sophie Durham, Nika Anžicek, Jenny Murdoch, Nicole Bryan-Quamina and Conni Schoëne, performed excellent routines, and the result was a Cambridge victory 100.5-98.0.  All the girls earned university colours but particular congratulations must go to Sophie, who finished in the top two on every event and easily won the individual all-around competition for a second consecutive year.  She was joined on the all-around podium by bronze medallist Jenny. Nicole was also an individual medallist for vault, where she performed the hardest vault in the B team competition.

The entire squad, which also included Laura Vale who performed a beautiful floor routine on the day, showed excellent depth, great team spirit and lots of promise for future competitions!
