In a tense match at Fenner’s, England held their nerve to record a three wicket win with only 4 balls to spare.
Having won the toss and deciding to field, England Under 19 were quick to make an impact with Jacob Ball removing Rumesh Buddika for just 9 runs. Wickets continued to fall regularly as Sri Lanka’s batsmen struggled to reach 90 for six. However, Dhanushka Gunathilleke rescued his side with an unbeaten 83. His innings included eight fours and two sixes from 102 balls. Supported by Sanitha de Mel with 29 not out, they helped Sri Lanka to 207 for seven from 50 overs. Best and Gregory took two wickets a piece for England with Dunn, Ball and Payne taking one.
Set a target of 208, Worcestershire’s Jack Manuel got England off to a positive start with 23 off 17 balls before being bowled by de Mel. A third-wicket stand of 63 by Root and Barrow put England in a strong position before Root, two short of a half century and Ateeq Javid were removed in rapid succession by Nadeera Rajaguru. More wickets followed, with Best dismissed for a duck and Rouse for five, leaving the match in the balance. However, Luke Wells’ 39, with support from David Payne, saw England safely home with only 4 balls to spare.
