ROWING - Cambridge win the 2010 Xchanging Boat Race
Saturday 3 April 2010
In an exciting and close fought contest, Cambridge battle from behind to upset the odds and win the 210 Xchanging Boat Race.
Thousands of spectators took to the banks of the River Thames today to watch Oxford and Cambridge Universities compete in the 2010 Xchanging Boat Race. The four and a quarter miles race from Putney to Mortlake was the 156th race in the series that started back in 1829. Oxford having won five out of the last six races were billed as narrow favourites in the build up to the race.Cambridge weighed in at an average of 95.05kg - just 0.5kg per man heavier.
There were 14 oarsmen making their first appearance in the Boat Race this year. Only four Blues from the 2009 crews remain, three of which were in the Cambridge crew. They included Club President Deaglan McEachern, last year’s President Henry Pelly and Rob Weitemeyer. The Light Blues also featured three rowers from the 2009 Goldie boat that lost to Isis - Fred Gill, George Nash and Geoff Roth.
The Oxford boat featured the Winklevoss twins, Tyler and Cameron and Club President Sjoerd Hamburger, the only returning Blue for Oxford. The boat also included 20-year-old Ben Meyers, who was a development squad member last year.
Despite a powerful and determined start from both crews it was Oxford who, taking advantage of their Surrey station, who moved into an early lead. By the time the crews reached the Harrods Depository, the Dark Blues were ahead by half-a-length. However Cambridge fought hard to stay in contention throughout the mid-section of the race and finally began to push through Oxford down the Chiswick Reach. The Light Blues continued to row with precision, power and technique to increase their lead. Despite increasing their stroke rate in the latter stages, Oxford were unable to respond and Cambridge went on to win by one-and-a-half-lengths in a time of 17 minutes and 35 seconds. Cambridge now lead the series by 80-75 with one tie.
Goldie also won the Reserve Race for the first time in three years. Although Isis took an early lead at Hammersmith Bridge, Goldie pushed ahead and remained in front until the finish. The Goldie crew finished in a time of 18 mins 03 seconds, having started on the Middlesex station, beating Isis by 2 lengths.
