Despite a valiant batting effort in their second innings, Cambridge MCCU lose to Sussex CCC by 84 runs. Day 2 - Summary
Cambridge faced an uphill struggle on Day 2 having finished the opening day 85 -5. Cambridge started very well with Park building strong partnerships with Ashok (24) and Woolley (18) before reaching his half century. Unfortunately three quick wickets which saw Woolley, Park and then Turnbell dismissed in quick succession swung the advantage firmly back to Sussex. Park put together a fantastic innings, reaching 72 before he was finally stumped by Brown off the bowling of Beer. Cambridge finished their first innings 181 all out off 57.5 overs.
Cambridge had a positive start in the field taking 2 wickets for 44, including that of Ed Joyce who fell to the bowling of Woolley for 13 runs. Brown then got into his stride for Sussex scoring an impressive, unbeaten 110. With Brown still batting and Rayner on 67, Sussex declared with 253 for 4. Sussex put Cambridge in to bat for eight overs and had an early breakthrough taking the wicket of opener Ansari. Cambridge finished the day on 25 for 1.
Day 1 - Summary
A dynamic start by Cambridge MCCU saw Sussex CCC reduced to 43-4 mid-morning of the opening day of their three day match at Fenner's. However the County side soon settled into their stride with, former England International, Ed Joyce scoring an unbeaten 135 - the 23rd hundred of his career. Ollie Rayner (54) and Ragheb Aga (66*) helped Joyce take Sussex to 277-5 when Nash declared at tea. Robert Woolley took three of the top orders wickets and ended with figures of 3 for 73 off 15 overs. Park and Lotay both took a wicket a piece.
Sussex made life difficult for the Cambridge batsmen with openers Ansari (13) and Hughes (5) both falling relatively early to the bowling of Aga. Grey reached 20 before being caught by Joyce off the bowling of Hatchet. Ackland (5) and Lee (2) also lost their wickets as Cambridge ended day 1 85 for 5.
