CRICKET - Cambridge MCCU V Surrey CCC
Monday 5 April 2010
Cambridge MCCU draw with Surrey CCC as Cricket mourns the loss of a bowling legend.
Day 3
The mood was sombre as the players took to the field at Fenner's today. The players wore black arm bands in memory of the Surrey and England legend, Sir Alec Bedser, who passed away on Sunday. Bedser took 231 wickets, in 51 tests over 10 years. Along with his twin brother, he was a key part of the Surrey team that won seven consecutive County titles in the 1950's. Following his illustrious playing career he continued to be a central figure within England Cricket, serving as a selector for 23 years. He will be remembered as one of the true cricketing greats.
On an overcast morning, it took Surrey just 12 overs to finish of the Cambridge tail. Surrey, intent on securing a result, added 105 to their first innings total, with Brown scoring 47 before being caught by Gray of the bowling of Turnball. With Harinath on 50, Surrey declared to leave Cambridge to chase 244 with three hours of play remaining. Surrey put the Cambridge batsmen under pressure early with an impressive display of away swing. Joslin edged the ball of the bowling of Dernbach to be caught by Davies behind the stumps for 11. Akbhar Ansari played a positive innings helping Cambridge to reach 34 for one when bad light forced an early tea. Ansari was not out on 26 with Gray on 19 at the end of play. With Cambridge on 58 for one the match was drawn.
