Sport at Cambridge

Tristan Coles

Tristan completed a BSc (Hons) in Sport Science as an undergraduate and then went on to complete an MSc in Strength and Conditioning. As well as the University of Cambridge he has worked in California as a ‘soccer’ coach, at Green’s Health and Fitness and Norwich City Football Club as a Strength and Conditioning Coach.

For over 10 years he has been the lead Strength and Conditioning Coach at Cambridge, using his knowledge and experience of training principles to enhance the performance and recovery of the individuals and teams he has worked with. Tristan has worked with a wide range of clients including professional footballers at Norwich City and international level athletes from a wide range of sporting disciplines including athletics, shooting, triathlon, hockey, fencing, rugby, water skiing, orienteering and sailing.  Specifically through his work on TASS (Talented Athletic Scholarship Scheme) he trained a Paralympic Gold Medalist (Beijing Olympics) as well as Commonwealth Games athletes.

He was part of the design team on the West Site Sports Centre project where his focus was specifically on the Fitness Suite and the Strength and Conditioning room design and layout. He followed this up by designing the Team Training Room, where amongst others the University Sports clubs train, which opened in October 2015.  On a day to day basis he oversees the smooth running of the Strength & Conditioning provision within the Sports Centre and is involved wellbeing initiatives for the sports service and across the University.

Tristan has undertaken various qualifications over the years to complement his understanding and to make sure his knowledge of the field stays up to date. His master’s dissertation was an EMG project which focussed on Gluteus Medius activation during a variety of unilateral and bilateral lower body exercises which examined axial vs. anteroposterior and contralateral vs. ipsilateral loading. While his current areas of interest include heart rate (HR) variability, HR based conditioning protocols and golf specific fitness training.

A keen sportsman himself, he played football at Cambridge United and Leyton Orient Centres of Excellence and trained with England U18s in his youth.  Now he is more likely to be found on the golf course than the football pitch.
