Why You Should Try BodyPump

When it comes to exercise, I am definitely a classes person. We have a Watt Bike and a treadmill at home and while I do use those, I need to be pushed by an instructor. I know then, that if I’ve done a 45 or 60 minute class, done as I’m told and tried my best – I’ll have had a great workout and not had to plan it myself.

I wasn’t sure BodyPump was for me as I have never been into lifting weights, but after meeting Roxanne the lunchtime class instructor, I decided to give it a go.

So, BodyPump is a group fitness class focused on weightlifting and strength training and claims to be the “most popular group fitness class in the world”. It’s all about correct form and completing the reps, rather than using huge weights. I normally do the warm up with a measly 1.25kg on each end of the bar and then double it for squats, but after going to the class regularly I have been able to add a little more gradually.

It’s usually quite a mixed class – men and women, young and not so young (that’ll be me!) but Roxanne participates fully so you can watch her and she keeps up a running commentary and gives constant guidance on stance and form and also regularly sings along to the music – how she does that while lifting some pretty hefty weights I do not know.

While the focus is on strength and toning- the squat, back and lunge tracks really get your heart pumping, so take a gym towel and a bottle of water – you’ll definitely need it!

Give it a go – Monday lunchtimes at 13:05 (45 min class) and Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 18:30 (55 min class). And if you download our app you can make sure you don't miss out on a space by booking early!
